Sorry to crash the party, but it would seem a little strange for Apple to upgrade the MacBook and/or MB Pro's until sometime after the 16th when their current college promotion ends.
well, in the past they have run this promotion and released new product without adding it to the rebate. so... i guess it would not be strange, no.

So Apple pays $100mil, and it sounds like Creative may be getting out of the iPod competition biz... and into the iPod accessory biz (which is probably more lucrative).

I came across this interesting article which says that Amazon is also planning to offer movies online in its store and that it has almost finalized deals with at least 3 of the big studios.

Is 20% speed improvement a lot for a core 2 designation?
The designation "Core 2" comes from the fact that it's a whole new architecture in the chip. The original "Core" processors aren't based on the Core architecture, they were based on the Pentium M. The Core 2 processors (Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest) are based on a 65nm dual-core 64 bit architecture - the desktop and workstation chips are based around the mobile Merom architecture.
Core 2 promised about 20% more performance at the same power requirement as the Core chip at the same clockspeed.

Yes, but that doesn't matter. The word Windows is no generic IT word, while app(lication) is. That's the difference.
"Apple" can't be used to trademark a fruit, but it can be used to trademark a computer. "Windows" can't be used to trademark "windows of a house" but it can be for an operating system. "App store" can be trademarked for a brothel but not for a store that sells computer applications.
We all called those things "windows operating systems" or "windows-based operating systems" (and "graphical operating systems") in the IT industry back in the day when Microsoft got the trademark. You very heavily focus on the slang word "app" in the IT industry rather than the term "App Store" which is what the trademark application is for. Oddly, Microsoft did not trademark "Windows Operating System" they trademarked "Windows" which is more akin to your argument against the single word being generic. Nobody is saying that "Windows" is something on a house and therefore can be trademarked in the computer industry -- I am saying that "windows" and "windows operating systems" had a meaning in the computer industry BEFORE Microsoft was given a trademark.

Can you provide any indications that Intel is dropping support for Thunderbolt? Any reason to believe that PC makers won't provide USB ports like they do now but also DisplayPorts like they do now, only in both cases the ports are upgraded to support USB 3 and thunderbolt?
I think it is too early to really get a read one way or the other. I am hopeful that TB will take off. But this time I think it will be more the drive and peripherals vendors that will make or break it. If they can do a USB3 drive and it will work with any system that has USB3 and/or TB, why would the also do a TB version? I am not saying they won't, but there is certainly an incentive to drop the extra sku and investment that a TB version would require.

Typically you get an upgrade and no price change. Sometimes the price even goes down.

Regardless of how you feel about Oprah she does have some clout. She actually got adults to read (remember her book club). In addition she could get lots of her watchers to buy a song on itunes simply by mentioning it on her show. And don't forget that iTunes also sells audiobooks.
One mention on Oprah about how if you buy this song/audiobook in the next week and 10% will go for the AIDS cause could be good for Apple/iTunes.
One last thought....
Oprah + Nike + iTunes (Apple) = lots of Oprah viewers downloading suggested files and then exercising.

If Apple thought that Creatives patent was bogus, they would have NOT paid. 100 million dollars is a lot of cash, no matter how you slice it. If the patent was bogus, and they still paid, Apple would be sending other companies a message that said "Want some cash? Sue us with bogus patents, we'll gladly pay!". No, Apple paid because they felt that they were really infringing and that if they had proceedd with the lawsuit, they would have lost a lot more than 100 million.
If it's a BS patent, why did Apple pay? Clearly, it was NOT a BS patent. True, the patent-system might be screwed up, but that is not the point of this discussion.

Apple's taken gambles in the legal process before and lost (see: Microsoft GUI case). Steve doesn't want to go through that again, so he pays off Creative. Then, being Steve, he somehow uses his RDF to get Creative to join the licensing program, which has the potential to MAKE APPLE MONEY off of this deal.

And finally, to answer your statement in the first paragraph: This is EXACTLY why the patent system IS messed up. Because it DOES send a message of "hey we filed this patent for something blatantly obvious, give us some money" In most cases, it will be cheaper to settle. Thus companies end up using Patents, rather than products, as a money-maker.

Any thunderbolt -> USB3 adapters out there? be useful for people who have 2011 macbooks...
( I know there's USB3 -> Thunderbolt connectors.. )

The thing I'm most impressed with is the 2GB video card. I have the 2008 MacPro w/ 3.0 dual core xeon, 12 GB of ram, an ATI 1900 w/ 512 ram. I just purchased Portal 2 over the weekend and cannot run it as it doesn't meet the specs. I'll have to purchase a new video card. A bit depressing...
