apple knows hot to create sexy products and market a gotta-have-it item, and with the cell phone market fickle yet fervent, a brand name like apple with premium brand badging and daring design could make big waves and have their loyal fanbase purchase yet another apple product in a different arena... i think its a good risk on apples part and will probably make me shares go up.

Your inability and insecurity to come within even the same area code of your own prior rhetorical question - choosing the greener pastures of everything-unrelated-to-something-you-started-but-can't-finish - says everything.

I guess you just can't relate to us creative types.

    What are you, an accountant?

Next time, I'll try to say in numbers so you can understand.

actually crucial already has your ram, apple's basically using an intel 5000 motherboard:

    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Intel%2B+Motherboards&mfr=Intel&tabid=AM&model=S5000XVN&submit=Go

I was thinking this myself until I saw it was 4 x 512mb sticks. That just sucks. If it was 2 x 1gb sticks I would say not bad but its not good. Give crucial a few days to look into it. They guarantee compatibility, if it doesn't work you can return it. I am holding out for third party ram and staying with the 1gb base. Thank god its 1gb and not 512mb they usually throw at us.

Sorry to cast a shadow over your decision but hey if you can afford it who cares right.

Too bad to hear, but I also have to think about the victims in Japan when hearing these kind of news, or unemployed workers due to the extensive damages. Those who want to build those batteries for us, but can't, and have to look after their family members instead. A situation an order of a magnitude worse than this... :(

No, I don't understand it that way. I understand that each group (one if we stay together, multiple if we split up) designates a leader. We do ALL of our conversation in the thread. Only the group leaders communicate the wishes of their group to the Game Gods via PM. They may take the consensus of the group, or they may implement decisions unilaterally without regard to group majority.

Correct in all aspects, except the leader posts the action in the thread, in bold. No PM.

I agree that we will "all be fine" if the world faces iPod touch shortages. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't be upset about it - can I not care about the people who lost their lives or had their lives turned upside down AND a company that will face problems? The two are not mutually exclusive.

I wasnt getting at anyone considering the position apple was in I was just a bit miffed that people considered Japan to be somehow a hindrance overall to apples business model. After all we are in a global market place and may it continue, only through collaboration will we get better and better electronics and consumer goods. No offence intended. :)

The sad part is its lack of focus. The Playbook has, what might be, the best real time OS ever put on the market. QnX is really kick a$$.

RIM is killing it with no idea what to do with it. Program with Air, Flash, Android, C, C++, Java, the kitchen sink.

If it runs Android Apps just OK, will anyone bother to write real apps for it? Instead of having 200 programming APIs on the thing, RIM should get a native email client.
Exactly. That's my take-away. They're so late to the game, they feel driven to make sure they're relevant by trying to support everything.... versus making sure they provide quality support of what they DO offer. If they really wanted Flash and Air, they should have let that be the END of it. Just make Flash and Air work really well, and then require new applications.

And, you forget Playbook ALSO runs Blackberry applications. What's the point of a realtime OS that no one takes advantage of? And they DO require Android apps to be resubmitted with a certificate to App World. My guess is that it won't run that app you bought and ran last year on your Droid 1. So, it's a big cesspool of technology as it stands. I'm curious if it will come across that way in the end... and if all that emulation and simultaneous processing winds the battery down... much.

I find this highly implausible. There is no way that Apple is going to let the iPhone fall too far behind Android phones. Maybe the design won't change much but the iPhone will certainly be updated.

    http://static3.businessinsider.com/image/4cbdf9decadcbbe57c020000-400-300/the-iphone-is-now-almost-half-of-apples-revenue.jpg

We already know that the iPhone is going to get the A5 chip in the next iteration and have already seen covers designed for the iP5.

It's spending on investment rather than spending on consumption.

This is a key point to the growing inequity of wealth in America. The rich have surplus funds that they are able to invest, while the poor, and a growing number of people are spending all of the income on consumption.

In 2007 Zhu Xiao Di wrote a report for the Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies title, Growing Wealth, Inequity, and Housing in the United States [PDF] (http://www.jchs.harvard.edu/publications/markets/w07-1.pdf)

    Abstract

The rapid growth of household wealth in the United States has been accompanied by drastic growing inequality. This paper discusses both wealth and inequality growth, examines demographic factors behind the growth, and analyzes housings role in it, using the Survey of Consumer Finances data collected by the Federal Reserve Bank. While aggregate household net wealth grew from $25.9 trillion in 1995 to $50.1 trillion in 2004 (both in 2004 dollars), nearly 90 percent of the net gains occurred only among the top quartile of households in the wealth distribution. Although housing wealth (both home equity and housing value) was still more evenly distributed than other types of wealth, it largely served to widen the wealth gap rather than to narrow it during the last decade.

In this report, he clearly illustrates the difference between household net wealth and household income.

Wealth Inequality and Household Net Wealth Growth

It is well known that the distribution of household net wealth is even more unbalanced than that of household income. Net wealth is defined as all assets net out all debts. In the top quartile of the household net wealth distribution held the lions share87 percent (or $43.6 trillion) while the bottom quartile of households had nothing. The upper and lower middle quartiles combined held $6.5 trillion, or 13 percent of total household net wealth (see Chart 1).

    http://www.interfaith.org/forum/members/citizenzen-albums-album-picture1305-screen-shot-2011-04-16.png

As he says in the report, "In other words, the bottom 28 million of American households in 2004 had nothing once their debt is netted out ..."

The difference between inequalities in wealth and income is quite natural, as one is from a stock perspective and the other is from a flow perspective. Low income households have to spend most or all of their incomes on life necessities with little capability of saving and investment so they can hardly accumulate any household net wealth. Thus they often remain in the bottom distribution of household wealth with nothing; the exception is the group of low income senior households who recently fell into the low-income category due to retirement and the loss of income. In short, while the bottom quartile of income distribution still has income, the bottom quartile of wealth distribution does not have any wealth net of debt.

There is no way the MBP's will recieve resolution upgrades before Leopard. Santa Rosa MBP's will definiantly be bumped to 1680x1050 and 1920x1200. Tiger is resolution dependent, which means that a higher DPI would make it nearly impossible to see anything.

Tiger also has a lot of controls to increase system level font sizes plus ZOOM so I don't think going higher res would be a problem with Tiger.

But please tell us more of what you know about resolution independence with Leopard and what new display technologies coming next year?

I too am interested in the display and related resolution questions.... A 17" MBP for used for video editing would make much more sense with a HD screen ie >1920x1080 (Sony already sell a 1920x1200 machine http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product/VGN-AR290G has a blu-ray burner too...)

As long as you can burn a DVD or USB key from it, it should be a good way of distribution. It seem a bit reckless, however, not to have a offline backup around. Sometimes even Time Machine screws up.

The entire idea of restoring from a Time Machine backup has always been illogical to me.

If Time Machine backs up everything, then it backs up whatever problems you had that resulted in your need for restore.

Time Machine has limited real use, and its basically limited to accidentally deleting things.

By now you should know that Apple is a greedy company, just wanting to hurt others and bankrupt several in the process.. its corporate america at its best.. hopefully NOT FOR TOO LONG.

You should really direct your anger at the giant Chinese state owned and supported mega-corporations that readily copy and steal intellectual data, employ slave labor, and otherwise follow no rules other than the wills of their government.

    My thoughts (as a developer):

Reasons to push it back (or more technically, announce it later):
    1) Data Center in NC was supposed to be ready in but actually ready 3-6 months later than planned.
    2) iOS 5 tied to cloud services, see point #1

    Reasons not to delay:
    1) In Apple said they would strongly prefer not to release too many services at once (they turned on MobileMe and the App Store in July, and MobileMe suffered terribly for weeks to months).
    2) More time to let Android and webOS catch up.

Of course, I want iOS 5 ASAP because notifications are so horribly broken, it's kinda sad, especially on the iPad where you KNOW it can be done in a better, less obtrusive way. That's one point where I say iOS for iPad really is just a scaled up iPhone version.

I don't get how people can view the iPhone design as dated (assuming externals here). I've been playing around with several Android phones lately, and they are all horrible cheap, plastic toys in comparison. I was surprised to find that even Android, the OS, is still slow, jerky and unpolished versus the good old iOS.

The only devices that can even compete on sheer quality and solid design are the Nokia n8s and e7s. In particular the n8. Just a pity about the software there.

By all means update the iPhone *development is good. But I don't see any need to forcefully change the design of it. It's actually pretty damn good.

Loras turned as they walked into a room and found a lit torch in a sconce on the wall. He went to reach for it, Wilmer dove into him and they fell, rolling and cursing on the hard stone floor.

"No, you idiot, it could be a trap!" Wilmer's face was sincere.

"Get off me you damned oaf," Loras grunted as he forced Wilmer off. "You really think that if there's going to be a trap, it's going to be a torch?" He stood up, brushed himself off and grabbed the torch. Wilmer flinched.

When nothing happened, Loras widened his eyes and made a dismissive gesture toward Wilmer, who stood his ground and eyed the torch uneasily. The rest of the group followed his lead with the torch and they explored the room.

They searched through a dead-end hallway and found plenty of dust and dilapidated furniture, but there was no treasure.

Dante poked Loras. "Alright, now what smart guy?"

The heroes have one more action this round.

It's yet another Dropbox offering that's a long ways behind awesome-integration with other products (Lots of apps sync data between devices via Dropbox). And, if I put a music file into dropbox I can play it, mobile device independent.

Also, why would I only want my music accessible when I have internet? Any road trips from where I live (Utah) generally put me in EDGE territory which won't be consistently fast enough to stream the audio at enough quality, let alone the fact that there are several dead spots along the way. I'll stick to having my music on my iPhone. No buffer, no stutter, no data usage. Oh, yeah. That. Data usage. With carriers bottlenecking you now, you think they'll favor Amazon cloud delivery for people who want to stream their music all day long? They (Amazon) will probably also do some more compression on the files so it'll sound like listening to your music in a tin can.

At first glance, being very pessimistic, I'm not really interested in this product.

you might have missed apple's product release strategy in the last 15 years. release a product with a limited set of features that work well and add on later.

same strategy here. if amazon waits until every possible listening scenario is taken care of they will never release a product. look at the kindle, all it does is let you read books and cheaply. and people love it

I always thought the case was one of the best things about the Mac Pro.

If only Apple would do what tons of people have been whining and screaming and begging Apple for - shove a regular i7 + nice board with some PCIe slots + REGULAR DDR3 in there and sell it as a Mac Sorta Pro.

    :D
