Thanks for the reply!
I do know to work with servers, its my job :D but at home im not dealing with monolithic server racks with cable trunking etc Im limited by budget and have to think outside the box sometimes to get things how i want them.
Regardless, what you're saying does make alot of sense. what it boils down to is that I either have to deal with the noise or wire the place up if i wanna stick it in the kitchen. great stuff, thanks again! :)

Hi guys I posted this in the general too but then realised there was this tiny section that might help me haha anyways,
My friend is recording my band on Pro Tools, and unfortunately it keeps freezing in the final stages as he doesnt have enough processing power for such a big task.
He uses an iMac and I have a Macbook Pro, both of which are under 6 months old and running Snow Leopard. Can we link them like a distributed computing system (just learnt what this meant!) and use my Macbook as a kind 'helper' with its CPU power?

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro running 10.6.6 and it is not being recognized by my TASCAM FW-1082 control surface (or vice versa). The "Firewire" light on the FW-1082 is not lighting up and I can not get the device to interact with my computer at all.
I have downloaded the latest driver for the FW-1082.
The Firewire 400 cable is running out of the FW-1082 to a Firewire 400 --> 800 converter and into the Firewire 800 port on the MacBook Pro.
Is anyone else having this problem? Has anyone found a work-around?
Any ideas will be very much appreciated...

I might be able to get my hands on a few copies of the NEW Super Mario Bros for DS for a little less than retail. Would anyone be interested in a copy at $30 shipped?

I found a huge box filled with Macintosh books. I'm putting them up for sale or trade if anyone wants them. They are $5 for any book or guide on the page, some include floppy disks. Most of the books are small, some are a little bigger than an inch thick. I have no more room for these so ether I sell them here or toss them out.
If you live in central NJ you can pick up the whole box if you wish for a mere $10. Most of the books are in good condition, but, they are used so there may be pages torn or writing on them. I accept Paypal, Check or Money order and will ship within the USA. If you want any of these let me know, thanks! :D You can make me an offer if you don't like the price, I really just want to get them out of the house.

for a mobile account being administered over a network by and OS X server does it need for the mobile account to be logged in for someone to be able to remotely access the computer? Also what firewalls and protections are necessary to avoid allowing the network administrators to access the computer? Thanks

I use the WRT54G here as well. Great web setup interface. Works with my PB airport extreme card. Cheap too.

Is anyone else experiencing annoying crashes and lock-ups in XCode 4? While debugging my multi-threaded apps (pthread, not GCD), I can navigate around in the paused state for about 45 seconds, after which I almost ALWAYS get a beach ball, XCode goes to 100% CPU utilization, and I have to force quit it. Occasionally, I'll get a SEGFAULT which the crash reporter tells me is an xcode GarbageCollection thread, and occasionally this lock-up will occur while I'm in the middle of typing inside a code window.
I tried re-running the XCode 4 installer, changing the debugger from GDB to LLDB and none of it seems to help. I never had these problems with XCode 3, and being that this is the first version of XCode I've actually had to pay for, I'm quite disappointed.

Okay, folks. This is an incredibly weird one. I know this has worked before. I stripped the code down to its barest form, so here it is, in its entirety:
tell application "Finder"
set theFolder to choose folder
set fileList to every file in theFolder
end tell
When I run itregardless of the folder I chooseI get the following message:
AppleScript Error
Finder got an error: Cant get alias "[path to folder]".
Anyone got any thoughts? Im banging my head against this one.

My wife runs all the time with hers. She uses the Nike+ system along with some very pricey Sony bluetooth headphones with a remote builtin. I almost bought her a Nano because I know it most of the features she wants. However, the bluetooth headphones wouldn't work.
Any tips or should I just wait for the Sonys to day and see about a Nano then?

Hi
In work we have a network running about 30 pc's. we have an iMAC which is used to produce video's and stuff.
We networked the iMAC to the pc's and we can access the regular drives but we cannot connect through the LAN to the internet. We use a gateway and have a firewall but no proxy server.
Any tips on connecting? Cant see any reason why its not working when the gateway is entered???
thanks
Ian

It's probably the camera. I've got an iSight, while my friend has one of those old Logitech quickcams. The picture from his camera (he's using some piece of software that let's you use USB cams with iChat) is just terrible, even when we're both on our gigabit network at work.
He tried out a different USB 1.1 camera from Creative, and the picture was significantly better. Still nowhere near iSight quality though.
If you think about it, even USB 1.1 speeds should be more than enough - 11mbps is far higher than what most of us have up to the internet. So it comes down to how much money the manufacturer put into the camera itself.
